04-04-2011, 03:43 PMHello all,
I am hoping you can help me with some info here.
I am about to get my motorcycle license and am currently doing some research on a low cost first bike, I have no riding experience.
I am wondering which, (if any) is right for me - the XF or XP.
I would use this bike for inner city driving (I live the NYC area), but also hope to do some light trail riding. I doubt I would be riding the bike over 50-55 mph.
I am concerned over my size. I am 6'4", 225 lbs, 27 years old. Will I be too large/heavy for a 200cc bike? From what I read the XF is lower/smaller then the XP. Will both perform the same on streets/dirt?
Some people are telling me I should just get a DRZ400.
Any insight would be very helpful.
Thank you in advance.

lost,
Welcome to the forum.
Don't agonize too much over your choice because if you get the motorcycle bug you will have a lot of bikes in your future.
The XF will be a little better on the street and the XP will be better in the dirt but both are fine for light duty.
A DRZ400 would be better for higher speeds but the 200cc will be fine for 50-55mph.
Hope about getting a beater bike to see if you are really into motorcycles? Something used, cheap, and already been dropped. After a few months riding then you will have a better idea of what you want/need.

04-04-2011, 05:53 PMThanks for the input, but what about my size, versus these 2 models?

You need to sit on the bikes to see how you fit. I'm only 6' and the XF200 is fine for me.

I figure that sitting on one is a good start. I am only 5' 7" so the DRZ is a little tall for me, and I have only sat on a Qlink which was fine for me. As far as cost goes, I figure if you can afford it, the DRZ could not be beat, but the Qlink could be considered in the same vein as deciding if you want a scooter vs. a bike. Both the DR and XF would be attractive to me, but I would probably go with the XF due to its far lower cost.

Now that culcune has brought up the scooter word, that would be my first choice for a urban vehicle. IMHO, My SYM HD200 is a much more suitable vehicle for city traffic than any of my motorcycles.

04-05-2011, 06:43 PMI def want a bike, not a scooter.
is 400cc overkill for a first bike? Also, as I understand it, smaller/lighter/bikes are better for dirt?
There is a guy locally who says he has a 250cc Qlink for sale, maybe thats the ticket...

Go look at and sit on the bike. What is the model of the 250cc Qlink?

I don't think the 250cc QLink is available yet. There is just the DS and Super-moto versions of the 200 cc QLink. I wish the 250cc QLink was available, it would be a good option.
What do you guys think about the KLX250S or KLX250SF? I have been toying with the idea of getting one of those. The DRZ400 is really probably too tall for me, I'm 5'11" but have a 29"-30" inseam, so I guess I'm considering the same bikes as lostlocal, although I'm also considering a pre-2008 Ninja 250.
I noticed the KLX250 has a pretty small gas tank, 2 gallons, compared to 2.8 for the QLink.
Trying them out is probably the best advice.--
