This is the bike the Chinese guy used in the 2011 Dakar. Is it sold in China?

I thought we had concluded that this was a Japanese bike with Chinese stickers on it. In other words, it's rebadged Yamaha WR450, methinks. Which, for the record, is not to my knowledge available legally in China, though there may be plenty of smuggled examples in the wild.

Kennon, was confused about your message until I realized you meant the bike's "roots" not its "routes".

Yes, this ADVRider side-by-side picture makes very clear that the "Jincheng" is actually a Yammie WR450. Nice bike!

    cheers!

Thanks for that. The rally kit for the WR450 is pretty pricey, I was hoping that JinCheng had launched a cheaper version of a full on Rallye bike based on a Japanese platform but alas, it just a wolf in sheep's clothing. Actually while browsing the forum I came across a thread talking about a legal 650 Dakar that was available a year or so ago. I would be really interested in knowing if it's possible to obtain a legal used 650 Dakar or 640/950/990 KTM?

I saw a BMW 650GS Dakar in a shop in Shanghai maybe a year ago. Don't recall if it had plates, but I doubt it. With a little help you could probably get it legally plated in Hubei (鄂), especially if it's been plated previously. I've see a few Dakars around, including last year at the BMW Motorrad Days festival at Huangshan. A friend of mine has one down in Yongkang.

Here's a couple of 650s on the market in Beijing.

    cheers

Thanks, if I can get my paws on a Dakar I'd be a very happy camper. Second choice would probably be a JL600. Meantime I'm planning on visiting the Tianjin traffic police next week re getting my bike license.
