this bike seems chained to a fixture, it takes them longer with unsophisticated tools. (Some use hydraulic shears)

Wow, this is so depressing, especially the first one with the van - the bike was gone before the bus had passed. And the third one, where a guy comes out, gets in his car, and just ignores the thieves with the bolt-cutters.

I remember reading an academic research paper on what is the most effective deterrent for B&E thieves, etc. The researchers interviewed over 2,000 convicted thieves. Alarms, locks, secured doors, etc, were surprisingly ineffective. Fewer than 20% said any of these items were a concern.

The number ONE deterrent for thieves? Overwhelmingly, it was a big dog. I recall the researchers found that almost all of the thieves said they would pass by if there was a big dog present.

Using a big chain and physically locking the bike to a pole or fence does help a lot though. If you park it in a row of of bikes on the street and yours is the only one that's actually locked to something, it'll be the last one to get stolen.

Tried but found it extremly difficult to put the dog on the bike and keep it there during the ride before chaining it to the bike for the night :)

Also difficult to keep a big dog within BJs 2nd ring road to watch the bike that is not allowed even within the 4th ring...
