We always find some nice spots to set up camp and if we are spotted some folks may show up but no one ever bothered us. We are well equipped and bring along chairs, table, bbq, etc - all on the bikes, no van, no car, no truck
Well I'm the only one with the bike among my friends

As for alternatives south of Beijing: Ever heard of the Guoliang Tunnels? (Confusing Website) It is in the border area of Henan and Shanxi, maybe 2 days of driving one-way.

Awsome place! I'm only afraid that bikes aren't allowed there.

Wow. Guoliang looks awesome though. OK, so consensus seems to be north is too cold and guoliang is off-limits. What is to the West? Might be time to go Fievel on this expedition.

Well, I definetly want to check out the tunnels some time. Might be a good idea to go there with a group of riders son one can go first and radio the others if there is any traffic coming from the other direction.

As for the October holidays: My GF and I would have time from 1st to the 5th. We are not really happy about the thought of riding two up for the whole time so I am thinking of borrowing/renting an additional bike for these 5 days. Anybody has any idea where to borrow/rent bikes in Beijing (no ChangJiangs, please!)?

    Hi filipu,

I am still interested in principle. Still, I don't know how many days and if I will be coming alone or as double-pack. Thanks for the link I already contacted them. You are right about the price and they want a 15.000 deposit. Got another contact from a friend and will call them up some day later this week to inquire about rentals.

As for weather: I spent the last two days on the bike and it was at moments already very cold. So from my side, I think I would opt for a more western/southern destination...

My riding PIC is still in Spain, so I can't guarantee anything. And yes, its getting quite cold. West/South may be better choice.
