#1 going abroad with chinese plated bike.08-31-2011, 03:51 AM
Hey, anyone knows? is it possible to cross the border? my bike is registered on the dealer, so it might make it even more complicated. I was thinking about mongolia. Any experiences? any special insurances?

08-31-2011, 06:20 AMAt our Saturday morning coffee klatch, GLF_Hans spoke in some detail about his ride with GLF_Pete out of Yunnan into Laos an on through Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia, then back into China, on a China-plated Shineray. Not sure why, but there are two threads on this ride, though neither covers Hans' re-entry to the celestial kingdom.
Perhaps Hans could be persuaded to give us a bit of detail about his two China border crossings, and whatever formalities were required of him.
If anyone else recalls any ride reports or other threads covering exit from China and re-entry on a China-plated or otherwise-plated bike, please feel free to chime in!
cheers!jkp

did a border run for visa issues from Erenhot into Mongolia and back (I stayed in Mongolia for only one hour) a couple of weeks ago. I went there by bus. The border can only be crossed by vehicle, not by foot. So far you would be safe. BUT: Because I had no vehicle at hand, I had to waive down a driver, who could take me into mongolia and back. First I thought, OK, I get an Erenhot Taxi driver to do it. But all of them declined. Later, I made friends with some locals and they told me (and I hope I understood correctly) that you have to pay a fee (I think 100 RMB) to cross the border and the car needs a special certificate to cross into mongolia or maybe a certificate from mongolian authorities to drive there. I am not sure if this only applies to locals but fact is that very few chinese plated vehicles and tons of mongolian plated vehicles crossed the border.
So my guess is that it will not be that easy. Maybe this is due to mongolian regulations rather than chinese ones...
I will try to reach a friend of mine in Mongolia but I think he is on vacation at the moment.
Anyway, good luck!------------------------------
