Leaving on a roughly 1700km long round trip from Beijing to Yantai, over to Qingdao, and then if there's time up to where the Great Wall meets the ocean before heading back home to Beijing! This is my first real long distance motorcycle trip and I'm really excited. In 2009, I had a failed attempt at a trip to Qingdao by motorcycle with a friend. That time was on much better bikes (Ninja and CB400) but unfortunately ended promptly and with less than desirable results (dropped off by a Mogolian and his truck at the 4th ring). If you'd like to follow along, I'll be posting periodically along the way which you can read on my motorcycle website, Rubber on Road. On the sidebar, you can also check my progress as I'll update my location with Google Latitude. If anyone has any suggestions of things to do or see along the way, please stop by and leave a comment (I won't be able to check the forums easily along the way) and I'll see if I can fit it in! Happy 国庆节 everyone!

Hi Bucko, hope you are well and enjoying your trip!

I just came back to the Jing from Qinhuangdao/Shanhaiguan. My advice: don't take G102 from QHD to BJ. It is a dirty road mainly used by trucks. It can be fast. I managed to do it in 7 hours, riding 2 up on a 150cc bike but if you can afford the time, take a more northernly route (S355, S251) with considerably less traffic and much nicer landscape. If you still want to take G102, hop on to the Expressway around Jixian because the last stretch is mainly urban environment with a lot of red lights and heavy traffic.

Thanks Zhu! Yes to both! I'm both alive and I managed to get myself lost, several times, bu thanks to luck, helpful locals, and my smartphone, it turned out in the end each time. Knock on wood though, still one day left!
