#1 Shed some light on this for me10-21-2011, 03:24 AM
It's getting dark around 6:00 PM now, so I'm looking for some lights. But being the anal retentive dick that I am, they can't be just any lights.
#1 I want BRIGHT...think 747 aircraft landing lights bright. I'm riding through pitch black woods at night.
#2 Must be super duper light weight.
#3 I prefer HID over LED.
#4 Maximum run time between charging would be 2 hours. This should help keep the battery pack size small.
#5 Quick mounting would be nice, so I can swap between my mountain and road bikes easily.
#6 Price not an issue, but I would like to keep it under 1000 RMB if possible.
Thoughts and suggestions?
Cheers!

I highly recommend Bikeradar for product reviews. It would seem that LED technology has come a long way recently and that lights are mostly LED these days.

Thanks "Z",
I was looking at that Magicshine MJ-872, but it's not getting the best reviews at the MTBR forum. Seems a lot of people are having issues with them overheating.
As far as I can tell, this China model has roughly the same specs and is close to the same price as the Magicshine.
It looks like you can get a lot of light for under 700 kuai if you look for the Cree XP-G LEDs in a multi LED setup or the Cree XM-L LEDs in a single LED setup. The cost of lithium ion batteries has become very reasonable, so the prices for making a decent light have plumetted in the last 2 years. I think this is how Magicshine is kicking butt in lumens per dollar. Unfortunately their QC or design problem still needs a bit of review.
Cheers!

Didn't know about the overheating problem with the Magicshine, but the review on bikeradar is good, and Magicshine seem to be favored over the Cateye models these days.
If it was me, I think I might buy these direct from the company in Australia:
