Public safety, everything is permissible unless expressly prohibited.

In the USA the only state that does not expressly prohibit lane splitting is California and they can ticket if it is not done prudently and safely.

The rest of the states all have laws forbidding it…

Why are the larger motorcycles more popular in the USA, why are the smaller light and maneuverable bikes so popular in the nations that allow lane splitting?

This guy just got his new XRE300, if you reside in the USA you will likely feel uncomfortable watching his first ride home, the rest of the world of lane splitters will likely not even take notice.

It's acceptable in California when the traffic is halted, typically, which is pretty often, which is also why they have stricter emissions, in the state on wheels.

Interesting reading the bit about Australia on Wikipedia saying that lane splitting is illegal but everyone thought it was legal(I thought it was legal)Hell I have pulled up next to the police many a time at traffic lights after lane splitting and they have done nothing and that was mainly on a trail bike. Most police hate trail bikes and will pull you over just to find something wrong with the bike and fine you.

I think it is what state your in whether it is legal or not.
