Just bite the bullet now, mate. Get the Red Threat here to Shanghai. You can always load it on a train back to Chongqing or anywhere else for your epic western rides.

You'll want that bike here in the Endless City, since the bike can get you efficiently to the edge.

Hi Christoph, I think you're making an excellent choice.

Chongqing is amazing for motorcycle riding, and all those bridges and hills make for some pretty awesome trips. When you get further out into the countryside it's even more epic. Interestingly, your YBR125 was "born" in the outskirts of Chongqing, purchased in May 2010, and gradually make its way over to Shanghai. Talk about serendipity that your next bike will also be "born" in Chongqing.

From past experience, it does take awhile to obtain the Chongqing license plates, and I didn't have the patience at the time. But it is possible to plate the bike over there, it just takes a lot of time. The decision to leave it with a friend make sense, and he can handle all that while the bike is left remotely. Meanwhile there are some totally epic rides in that area towards Kunming, and I'd be waiting with baited breath to read about those trips.

Guizhou province, by the way, allows legally plated bikes to ride the expressways. That is certainly on the way to Kunming.

As for a trip in Myanmar onwards to India, I love the idea, but I don't know how feasible it would be to travel overland with the bike. Even regular tourists have a hard time, if not impossible, for any kind of overland travel. That may very well change as Burma opens up but for now I'd remain cautious.

It may be painful to be separated from the Jialing while you're in Shanghai, but a small beater bike or a scooter can still help for getting around the city -- or keep the Yamaha. Legal Shanghai plates are more trouble than they're worth. You'll get a much better deal with licensing it over in Chongqing. If you ever decide you want to ride the Jialing in the city, then it would make for an epic ride to take in across China this way also.

2. I’ll pick up the bike and break it in hard with non-synthetic oil (just to be contrarian, I'll follow the mototuneusa guy's advice) and do an oil change after the first 20 miles...

Could you brief me up with the mototune break engine in technique as im stuck here:
The main thing is to load the engine by opening the throttle hard in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear. How long are we suppose to hold the throttle hard and how many times to do it?
so break-in is completed after 20km of practice?

Hi Deom2i, thanks for the encouragement! I just got back from Chongqing yesterday night and I must admit that about all the breaking-in hard theory, well, I just ended up riding more or less normally with a bit of red-lining in first gear, and I didn't even change the oil ... so I didn't do it right but at the time it just didn't matter anymore ... this is my first big bike, so I don't really have any real insights beyond all the stuff you find on google. But let me know how you get on!!
