Last I heard was 68K, but that was maybe 6 weeks ago.

Plate prices are volatile right now, but one thing is very clear: Bike plates are no longer directly tracking the price of car plates, as they did for a long time. Because the pool of bike plates is finite, and in fact shrinking as riders reassign their bike plates to cars, there is now a premium for bike plates. The peak two months ago was about 72k for a bike plate vs 68k for a car plate. In the June car plate auction, the city apparently released a larger-than-expected number of car plates, and the priced dropped below 60k. Bike plates dropped too, but not as much.

The reason bike plate prices were tracking car auction prices was that they were seen as having little additional value beyond their intrinsic value of being able to be reassigned to a car. But now, as surging sales of larger-displacement motorcycles fuels demand for 沪A plates, bike plate prices are starting to carry a premium. The reason is simple: They are in limited supply amid high demand, and in fact the supply is shrinking. That's because a bike plate can be reassigned to a car, while a car plate cannot be reassigned to a bike. Shanghai has not issued a single new motorcycle plate (except for the odd diplomatic plate like dipstick's) in years, and no one I know has heard of any plans to do so. For this reason, the Harley dealers have guys who do pretty much nothing else besides scour the secondary market for available plates. They may actually be worth their weight in gold.

Moral of the story: If you know of anyone who is thinking of putting their bike plate on a car, please tell them they are leaving money on the table (not to mention screwing their fellow motorcyclists). Have them sell the bike plate to another bike owner, then buy a car plate with the proceeds -- and pocket several thousand rmb in profit.
