scooters, 50, 100, 125, 150cc easy to find and hire... motorcycles not so much. Take your helmet and gloves, the rest is up to you... if you got a jacket that packs well... and if you have some boots that can be worn both on and off a bike and not look out of place, then I'd take them too. What ever you see yourself comfortably wearing while riding a scoot.. I'd take it. Unless you want to chance buying something there to bring back, though HK/J@p@n would be the place for motorcycle gear. OK maybe not the latter so much depending on your political persuasion. Enjoy...

HK = Hong Kong
J@p@n = J a p a n...
A bit of a dirty word at the moment given island swapping etc. just like T!bet I tend to use little typos so that any censor sniffing going on might not bring up MCM... keep it below the radar. Sure there are bigger fish to fry but no use in being antagonistic... :() so nope aint some hidden gem of a store... sorry about that cryptic slip

It depends a bit where you will be, but it is mostly a great country for riding.
Mountain roads are almost everywhere, traffic is much more diciplined then here, and big bikes are a fundamental part of it (and legal!).
Ther are several shops who rent big bikes, I only heard their requirements increased a lot (probably learned it the hard way).
Not sure you can still rent from them as a foreigner without a TW-nese driver license.
Always good to know a local who can introduce you though.
And if you can't rent a big bike, go for a scooter.
I make 300 km daytrips on a scooter every time I am there, and it is almost mor fun then a big bike. 150cc in the twisties, nothing much that can beat that
