Reading another thread on here I got to wondering if China has the world's worst traffic in terms of congestion, selfish behavior and poorly maintained vehicles. From my personal experience I would tend to agree.

On the other hand I've hear the Russia is even worse? I've been to India and found they have extremely congested traffic but in general people are more "Aware" of each other than China.

So what do you guys think? Who takes the gold for the world's worst traffic in your opinion?

I think there is a "worst traffic" everywhere on the planet.

Urban / downtown traffic in greater Seoul is the worst I've ever experienced - congestion almost 24/7, worse than everything I saw in China.

Suburban traffic in China is a nightmare, downtown Yuppies in their big SUVs and the rural all_kinds_of_three_wheelers_traffic make it a deadly mixture.

Driving / riding at night in the countryside is close to suicide almost everywhere, maybe except North America and Western / Central Europe.

From what I read in several blogs, traffic in India follows a strict cast system - the bigger the vehicle the higher it's priority, with the horn being the most important technical item. Similar, this applies to Indonesia and parts of Malaysia.

Every road with three lanes is used as a ten laner in Cairo, Islamabad, Tehran and who knows where else.

Now to answer your Q, based on the places I've been to:
    Gold: China
    Silver: Pakistan
    Bronze: Vietnam

    Safe riding / driving

    Gold:
Eight years in China, probably wasted two of them sitting in traffic , the pearl river delta has pretty much mastered the art of gridlock.

    Silver:
Mumbai India, I spent four days there, one day from the airport / two days business / one day getting back to the airport.

    Bronze:
Getting in and out of Manilla in the Philippines is pretty sketchy. The jeepneys, busses, bars on windows and occasional individual packing heat gives it an interesting feel.

    Cheers!

I fully agree with China being the worst (at least for a country that I've visited). When I was in Thailand I was on a bus with an Australian bitching about the traffic and driving style and traffic in Thailand. My response was, what the hell? The driving here is great!
True story, Thais aren't wonderful, but they aren't so bad.

I've also been to India, everyone where the traffic was crazy busy, the worst being Varanasi, but everyone had a spacial concept of where everyone else was, and in terms of road space used was much busier than China.

Beijing these days is much better than it used to be and if you call Hong Kong and Macau China, there is some fantastic driving here.

I've heard there are other contenders, as I haven't been everywhere yet, but Chinese have to be the most selfish and inconsiderate ever.

I am surprised you say Vietnam, I thought the traffic there was busy but considerate. No agro ever and seemed to just flow in a noisy stream.

Northern Vietnamese traffic is pretty similar to China, while in the South it's as you said. But of course all my impressions.

LOL. I hear their vehicles have the horns wired directly to the clutch, brake and accelerator pedals. The noise is meant to be astounding.

I know the answer to this one !!!!

The worst traffic in the world is where ever Culcunes riding in it , him being the cause of course !!!

All kidding aside , Los Angelas ranks right up there I am sure at rush hour . Go figure, Culcune is from there ? Hmm things that make you go Hmmmmmm ?

I lived in Saudia Arabia and stupid is as stupid does there too , some of the worst I have seen in my travels for sure . I watched a young guy on a scooter get run right over at a light by a 5 ton Mercedes truck . DOI , and nobody even stopped to help or give a second look . Arrogants at its finest over there in Hubbly Bubbly Land .
