Hi, I'm thinking to move to Singapore or Malaysia this year. Anyone? I'm wondering if it's easy to go to to ride in Malaysia if you live in Singapore and what driving license I would need. thanks

Aren't vehicle plates in Singapore even more expensive than in Shanghai? Like $100k a pop? Or is that just for cars wanting to enter the CBD?

    cheers

Cars are prohibitively expensive - I don't know about $100K - but 40-60K definitely. Motorcycle plates will run $3-$5k (if I remember and things haven't changed since last summer) because the government *gasp* actually wants people on bikes to keep traffic down on the small island.

The real killer is going to be parking fees!

I believe that you can drive there on an International license - or at lease use one to get an Singapore license. I don't know about if bikes are allowed on the Malaysia ferry - but I bet that they are, there's a large workforce who live in Malaysia and work in Singapore because of cost-of-living expense and they ferry their cars/busses across the channel to/from work.

OK, according to google, Singapore taxes vehicles as a percentage of their open market value. The taxes for cars are onerous: 100% for the first $20k of market value, 140% for the next $30k, then 180% for additional value above $50k. So a car with a market value of $75k would be subject to taxation of $20k + $42k +$45k = $107k. Things are way better, relatively speaking, for a motorcycle: 15% of the market value in registration fees and an additional 12% in excise tax, or 27% of the value of your bike.

Now THAT's a policy that China would be smart to adopt!

    cheers
