May 11, 2013 weekend in Hangzhou

Years back, I was teaching grad-level Finance courses at a university in Shanghai (joint program). Understandably, 99% of my students were bookworm nerds. But there was this one student, a female, who told me that her dream was to learn how to ride a HD (I sometimes wore a HOG shirt to lecture). I was dumbfounded, laughed and tongue-in-cheek informed her "then you will need to get a tattoo!" Her eyes lit up and, without hesitation, she shouted "Great!" Yeah, she was certainly the 1%'r in the program. Anyways, dollars to donuts, this sure looks like her ...

Unfortunately, I've lost contact with her. But if it is her, my heart warms thinking she followed her dream!

Good for her! Though that's another gathering i'm glad i didn't go to...

Here's more from reuters, including this classic attempt at bike talk "a bike with a horse power of more than 1,000 CC"

Do they realise that they look more like a gay pride than a biker gang?

^ guess the give-away would have to be guy in the foreground holding the bottle of water in the left hand and a whistle slung round his neck... plus they're all smiles which is huge change from the usual frowns that used to be so common in most photos I've seen taken with/of mainland Chinese...

At first glance though, I had flashbacks of some of the scenes in “Every Which Way but Loose" with the bikie gang the Black Widows...

They have terrible taste in bikes, bike accessories and clothing, but I'm glad they are around. Breaking the mold no matter how badly is great.

There are some really fun slide shows in that Atlantic site. Click on the DIY in China headline at the bottom and you'll be treated to things like this:

    Shanghai
2010 JH600 "Merkin Muffley" (in Shanghai)
2000 KLR650 "Feezer Ablanalp" (in California)

    Interesting.

I've been to Sturgis and I've been to Daytona Bike Week, and I'll never return to either, but I still think it would have been quite interesting to experience this event. To see a Chinese interpretation of the classic MC rally would seem like an episode of The Twilight Zone.

    Cheers,
