    Hi everyone -

I'm starting to think a bit about organizing a ride through Tibet this coming July and have been working with Tibet Travel on some of the logistics and costs. I'm still in the early stages of planning, but wanted to see if anyone had any interest in making the ride.

Tibet Travel can help us get the necessary permits, guide, and a support vehicle.

A "minimum" trip of 5 days would run around 14k RMB. We'd meet the guide in southern Qinghai close to the border of the Tibetan Autonomous Region, ride two days to Lhasa, spend one day in Lhasa, and then ride two days back out. The meeting point would be about 500 km from Golmud.

A longer trip of 20 days runs around 70k RMB. This would probably be something like Xining through the T.A.R. (including Lhasa and Mt. Kailash) and out to Kashgar. I think this price is negotiable, depending on # days, meeting point, etc.

The costs are fairly fixed and could be divided evenly across the group.

Basically every detail is flexible - the two options above are just to get an idea of costs - so departure points, # days, route, timing, etc. could all be changed.

If you have any interest, let me know!

I'll be brutally honest...maybe I shouldn't say this but here goes:

Fact is, you've paid the Chinese road tax and you should be able to ride in Tibet regardless. When people pay these companies by doing so they also pay the political overlords, they both earn nice $tacks of ca$h, so then this need for foreigners to 'be escorted' in Tibet will never end, when people are having their 'keeping foreigners under control' and 'earning well' out of it cake and eating it then the area might just get larger to anywhere they can justify the same bs XJ, Mon XH, anywhere with an ethnic minority, hand over the cash laowei.

    Just my honest opinion.

I undertand where ZMC888 is coming from... the place here is anal sometimes, ok, most of the time. Pat, if you have a legal bike, I'd suggest forgetting T!b3t, instead deal with an agent to assist you (not guide you) to get the paper work sorted so as you can ride through Laos or Burma to Thailand, cause Thailand is one hell of a mecca for riding, especially NW Thailand... the people are friendly as all heck, the road are pretty darn good, there are hundreds of more places that one can buy food, western or otherwise on most major routes, and even if English is not used the locals are way more intuitive and less 'dear in the headlights' than what often happens here when a foreigner ventures of the beaten path, and one can stay in pretty much any lodgings unlike here, and the driving behaviour and fundamentals are 100 times, no 1000 times better than the this shi3t hole... hey but that is just my opinion...

Pai, Mae Hong Son, Nan, Chiang Rai, Mae Sot, Mae Sereng and so many more places... 600km, 1847 corners... Thailand has one of the top ten motorcycling routes in the world... so why bother with a place here which is supposedly 'out of bounds'... BS...

I did 7 weeks in NW Thailand the majority on a CB500X starting 1st January and had a blast. Way way better than riding here by far for many of the reasons stated above and then some not mentioned. During the Ch!nese New Year we, saw many, many hordes of Ch!nese plated cars for the week long vacation driving in convoy and different sized groups in NW Thailand. At night it was easy to pick these vehicles out from the locals, since these were the Ch!nese vehicles being driven with their lights on fullbeam - farkin farkwits! Good thing was that the situation only lasted a week... Most of the vehicles though were from Yunnan/Kunming. We did speak with a few drivers in a few of these tour groups. All indicated that getting/driving the cars from Ch!na to Thailand was a fairly painless affair. I also know of a 4x4 club based Guanxi province that does runs several times a year with mainland plated 4x4's & SUV's into SE Asia.

IMO I'd spend the time and effort organising a trip into SE Asia than t!b3t... YMMV.

    Hi Pat

For the last 16 weeks I have been riding all over North Thailand finding out the lay of the land so to speak about bring bike rides over from china to Thailand and what a can say forget Tibet as biker doc said who did join me for 7 weeks and we clock up over 20.000 km in just 7 weeks . Thailand is far better a place to ride . I was thinking about putting together a package for guys to fly direct to chiang rai from china for 14 days with bike rental , hotel, food , fuel, flights for about 20K Rmb all in the bikes will be low mileage Honda CB 500 X or Kawasaki Versys comes with top boxes and side boxes as well . Over the last 16 weeks I have been building up contact over in Thailand to help with the tours .
I have posted this a bit early as I was hoping to do a full post with more details but I am not home yet in Longkou but have just landed in hainan (sanya) for 6 weeks riding here . But soon I hope bikerdoc will be posting some RR soon on his trip to North Thailand .

The other tour I was thinking about is that we bring our own bikes over !! Which can be done as well I have found out most of the problems if we go down this route but it we mean for some people in china to ride or ship there bike nearer to the Laos border , but all these points I can talk to people later . As I said I have posted this a bit early then I would like to have done but hay let's start the ball rolling but I was thinking about later on this year when it get cold in china or for Chinese New Year 2015 ?
I be interested if other people would consider a tour over to Thailand

I am sure Mr Doc would love to come again lol
