I am following this along with interest as the 650 had caught my eye. I am very interested to see how these machines work out

Keep in mind the 650 is actually only 600cc, the frame and some parts are heavier. Which makes it kind of a pig compared to the 300 and 500. The positive side is obviously the bigger fuel tank, and wider likely more comfortable seat.

In the end it all depends on what you want to use the bike for.

Have a look at the Spare parts catalogues Barry kindly posted on post 74.
Open up the parts for the 500 and the 650 check out the pictures for the rear sub-frame.
IMO it looks like the 650 has a stronger rear end frame incorporating grab handles fixing points that the 500 don't have.
Now if you are thinking of touring then some sort of rear frame need to be fabricated to take Hard or soft bags/boxes.
Again IMO maybe the 650 sub-fame is better suited.
The other big plus is the larger tank.
Not saying the 500 is not a good bike just saying need to look at all options.

For travelling in China I would advise the RS650R as it is much more configured for travel with bigger tank, wider seat and also rear support frame seems to be reinforced.
The RS500R is a pure competition bike.

That will work but think about some lugs at the bottom to tie back the soft bags at the bottom to stop them flapping about IMO

On my draft are still pins and lugs missing as the design is still not thought to end.

I do it one and do it right. That is a bit time consuming

There aren't any competitions on my horizon, that is for sure! As others have mentioned, I am yet to see an rs650 for sale here, only the sm650.... a dealer have told me they can get them but he has lost all credibility AFAIIC

.... not more to say! I have already 2000km on it.

Its a big fun and tempts for show off when the traffic light switches green.
Just open the throttle and wheelie it to 3rd gear easily.

but serious:
a) The engine is very responsive, but rough below 3500 rpm. U need to switch gear frequently. Its simply the nature of a competition bike.
b) My consumption is now around 4.5 to 5L / 100km
c) The build quality is IMO really good. The seat is hard but ok (for my ass).
d) The Karoo3 tires are not best choice as the shaping / profile makes the bike bouncing in certain speeds ranges. Causing amplitudes .... ?
e) After removing all limitations but keeping the O2 sensor that bike is too fast. I speed up to 160kmph but then the big front fender creates soo much buoyancy that the front gets scary light weighted and the bike is for my taste unstable. .... and I had throttle not fully open yet. Some one else with more gut might try it out.
f) in 2nd gear and tight corners watch out. It is so much back hand power that the rear is drifting away (Supermoto style)
g) Brembo brakes are excellent and the hydraulic clutch is great.


After wondering why my throttle twist is so short and the rev's end at 6800 rpm i found the throttle limiter (part# 10) and removed it. Then I had suddenly a new bike.
... and nearly back flipped on the first wheelie after removal, because suddenly a firework started beyond 6800rpm.

I changed the mirrors to more fancy ones as I dont like that original paddle style.

Furthermore I made myself a pair of new risers and installed it with longer screws.
The original are 13mm long, so I choose 26mm and can by that combine them to 13mm, 26mm, 39mm.
I have now in total 39mm and find it for my height most suitable.

The rack design is not finished but I got just now the final idea how to make to complete rear frame stronger to carry load.
I will come with a sketch once finished.
