The CJ750... IMO are a pile of bull faeces!
Even with the added BMW engine - it's akin to attempting to polish a turd... YMMV!
In my circle, there are a number of ex-CJ750 riders, and a couple that still have them. I ride a fully restored CJ750 that a neighbour has from time to time (he'd had two and I've ridden them both). Sure look nostalgic and all that, and as an added bonus not only do the CJ's look the part of a long lost era, they provide the full immersion experience, a large cache of tools required because every trip more than a few kilometres - one will be requiring those tools - almost guaranteed.
In one riding group, it got so bad that the few owners with CJ's were told they'd best not bring the CJ750 on any future rides... as the collective were past impressed having to always stop for one CJ or another to get running repairs on the side of the road some place - eating into valuable riding time etc. It was a quaint experience the first several trips, but it soon got old. Fortunately the few riders in that group affected, have other more reliable rides, so they still get to ride on the group rides.
As to the question of legality. Forget it... you'll likely be told loads of porkies by all and sundry. Very very - very few CJ750's have legal plates. Even fewer can be legally plated in your name (Foreign or Chinese name)... (no matter what some owner/seller or shop owner says) - period!
As for a restored CJ750... the average is round 35K.. more with the BMW engine. But to me it's a complete waste of money. You cannot make it 100% legal, and therefore can't get insurance. Sure you could get a Waide plate (which are getting harder and more expensive), which might cover you for a maximum of two years, then what? .... "Meiwenti"
YMMV.Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist

Ok - many thanks for the input - the message is slowly getting through, may be able to spend the money more wisely. On another note - the used japanese bikes, probably the illegal ones honda cbr 400, yamaha TW225 ... there is no way to get them legal???

Ok now that we have dispensed with the CJ if you still want a sidecar have you considered the Jialing 600. Almost modern with bosch injection, good brakes, nice engine and fully legal. A bike that can actually take you somewhere without filling the chair with tools. About 55k new I think.
