    Welcome--your state makes your bike choices a little narrow--keep that in mind, but it depends on what kind of bike you are looking to get into (pure dirt/off-road only, street legal enduro, sportbike, cruiser, scooter, etc)

    For starters, I would steer you to two bikes which are C.A.R.B. legal (again, many of the bargain $1300 street-legal enduros are NOT C.A.R.B. legal, so you are already out of luck on those) for starters;

    The SSR has shown itself to be a fairly stout enduro, albeit slightly high priced taking the Chinese and 'unknown brand' into account. However, they are California legal.

    Another bike is the CSC adventure bike--it is California-legal and proving itself more and more to be a good, budget choice--read this section of Chinariders.net (these are all owner posts) http://chinariders.net/forumdisplay.php?f=136

    http://www.cscmotorcycles.com/

    Good price and intriguing enough to consider based on what you get for the price. But, again, join chinariders.net, too, and research the above threads. Stick to the US based members, however, as other countries' Zongshen RX3's are imported into other countries with slightly different or lack of features the CSC bikes have (i.e. some countries only offer the RX3 with carbs vs. CSC's USA bikes having fuel injection).
