You are all probably aware of this; but if not, this is a pretty interesting account of a couple of Aussies who rode a couple of Transalps (legally and unescorted) across China in 1994. They claim to have been the first laowai to do this since 1949. Worth a read; 1994 already seems like a different era!

Well those guys sure had a lot of sponsors!!! It may be true if they're claiming that they were the first foreigners to satisfy all three conditions of riding:

    1) Translaps
    2) Legally and unescorted
    3) From Shanghai to Beijing (which is, BTW, not across China)

... then maybe. But really, there were foreigners there before that one of them being a guy named Dave Barr who rode around the world (through a Siberian winter) and into China in 1992. If that's not enough, he lost both of his legs in a landmine accident as a soldier and did it all with prosthetic legs! This guy is the real deal!!!

Mad props to Dave Barr, he has a few books and now owns a moto-touring company and is an inspirational speaker as well as in the Motorcycle Hall of Fame.
