Hi everyone. So , I would like to put a wider tyre on my bike. My Bike is Pulse adrenaline XF125GY-2B. The tyre that i want to put on is 140/60 R17 Pirelli Diablo Rosso 2 Currently I've got Michelin Pilot Streets on. 130/70 R17 on a back wheel. I have found charts saying that 140/70 and 140/80 would fit a 3 inch rim. But from a information that i have found. That the with the profile of 70 or 80 tyre would be very pointy. ( less rubber contact with road) . Tyre with the profile of 60 would have about the same radius as 130/70 tyre. On MCN website I've found that if I go up by 10 in width need to go down on a profile by 10. Has anyone done this before?

    Hi,

I have gone through the same exercise some years back on some bigger street bikes (BMW 2 valve K models and Yamaha Diversion 600). In all cases, by increasing the width by 10, the profile decreased by 10. This was even approved by the German TUEV, which is known to be very concerned about our "safety".

    BMW K100: 2.75 inch rim from 130/90 to 140/80
    BMW K75: 2.75 inch rim from 120/90 to 130/80
    Yamaha: 3.5 inch rim 130/70 to 140/60

The results afterwards were varying a lot. Both BMW's behavior got worse when trying to get into the corners, the Yamaha did not change at all its behavior.

These results might have been based on the fact, that the Yamaha rim was much wider than the ones of the BMWs and the wider tyre was not so much pressed ending up not being too much pointy...just my guess. As this have been much bigger bikes and also the tyre technology improved a lot in the recent years, I have no idea if these experiences can be carried over to your bike.

    Cheers

    Norbert
