Hello. This thread indicates faulty side casting mount issue was only related to the first generation 650TR and a recall was not executed.
If one were to purchase a first generation 650TR, is there any way to visually confirm the side casting foot peg mounts were replaced with a stronger and safer side casting foot peg mounts?
    Are differentiating stamps available?
Are those of you who own first generation 650TR's simply relying on a visual inspection to determine if the side castings should be replaced?

By the way, does the date range of the first generation 650TR only include motorcycles manufactured during late 2011 until the end of 2012? (dates obtained from Internet m/c review...) Therefore, did the production date of the second generation start in 2013?

    Thanks in advance.

Dave .. I have got to ask you, does it matter really. For the numbers sold and the few reported failures?

IMO regardless of what year you buy, why not just buy 2 new later foot pegs and perhaps the mounting plates?

Part costs are very low for CFMoto products in China. Search Taobao and see for yourself. You'll need Chinese language skills or access to someone with them though.

If you do that then jobs done and your mind should be able rest easier?

As I said really its such a small issue. Just replace the components and be done with it, or buy/stock/carry spares.

If you consider foot-pegs to be a major issue then probably best not to buy any Chinese made bike full stop.

Spend your money on a new Japanese import for 5 times the cost.

    >does it matter really.<

    Prince,

As anyone who has ever ridden a motorcycle knows, this faulty side casting foot peg mount issue could be disastrous. An issue potentially causing loss of control and/or broken ankle, leg or...neck should be properly understood and the information shared with the CFMoto motorcycling community or 2012 CFMoto owners.

An American CFMoto service manager informed me CFMoto sells products in 72 countries. I have no idea how many countries imported the first generation/2012 650TR. However, I am sure every 2012 CFMoto owner isn't a member of this forum. CFMoto should have released a service bulletin...maybe they did.

As you know, I am reaching out to local 650TR/TK owners in the USA. I asked about this issue because I hope to:
    1. learn more about a 2012 650TR/TK model I am researching,
    2. anticipate meeting 650TK/TR owners,
    3. would like to learn how to identify this issue and possibly share the potential risk with other owners.

I asked about the date range of the first generation because the manufacturing date of the later stronger and safer side casting foot peg mount should be known. I've seen faulty parts replaced with the same 'new' faulty parts by manufacturers many times. I assume there is a visible difference between a 2012 and 2016.

It is not a matter of being intimidated by a Chinese product and being unwilling to 'wrench' on it.
It is not a matter of the replacement costs of the faulty side casting foot peg mounts and or foot pegs.
It is not a matter ordering additional parts from Internet/Taoba, although the delivery time and process would be inconvenient in my case.

It is a safety issue and risk that all 2012 owners should be aware of, especially for heavier riders. If CFMoto provided a range of VIN numbers associated with this faulty batch of castings, then I agree it is a small issue and should be addressed easily and forgotten. However, if I encounter someone on a 2012 650TR/TK, I will ensure they are aware of this issue, simply out of concern for a fellow motorcyclist.

I am simply trying to learn of a safety risk and share the knowledge. If my inquiry prevents one broken ankle, it will be worthwhile...

That's all. Yes. It does matter.

I am surprised how some senior members of this list become so defensive while discussing shortcomings or safety risks of a Chinese motorcycle and then immediately suggests the inquirer look elsewhere. Perhaps it is the result of years of similar inquiries causing the impatience... Everyone approaches motorcycling with different experience, different technical knowledge and a different level of expectations in regards to reliability and quality. Patience brother. Share the love...

    Hi Dave
I can understand your concerns but you are talking about a Chinese company who produced a new model motorbike and released it for sale to the Chinese market.

The new owners of the model in China then are the beta testers for CFMoto for the next year or so when most of the faults come to light, then and only then the bike is released for export. At least that's how it seems to work.

"WE" all know this so we don't give a shit that's just the way it is Dave TIC (this is China).

Chinese companies don't work in the same way as western companies.

However as I see it, if this issue of foot peg failures were a significant of an issue then we should be able to find scores of reported failures during your due diligence searches using Go.ogle right? But you have posted that you are unable to find much of anything reviewing the 650TR? If you can search using Chinese then you will find more reviews and riders reports, since the 650TR was released in China.

If I remember correctly in bikerdoc review of his CFmoto Jetmax here on MCM CFMoto did a voluntary recal on a number of items very earlier after the first release. Go search his review for the details. So it would seem that CFMoto would issue a recall notice if failures became significant.

I wonder if the number of failures would represent a significant percentage based on sales compared to say the final drive failures on R1200GS models from that German brand that still has never acknowledge the issue. No global recalls on that. Just a a little searching that on Go.ogle brings one to many threads and posts on different forums.

    My 0.02c

It's one thing to be outside China looking in and trying to find information or a method to go about something, but it's entirely different being inside China. Once you get here Dave, you'll see the reality first hand...

    Good luck

FWIW...650TR/TK foot-peg mounting bracket or base plate, costs 228yuan each. Available in black or silver/grey. Fits all generation TR/TK.

Ordered a pair today (specifically requested post 2014 MFG date) to add to the box of spares I have in the garage. A glance at the original brackets this morning on my way out of the garage didn't indicate any visible cracks. However proper crack testing isn't done visually, it requires specific specialised equipment and techniques, either radiography methods, sonography or pressurised equipment test-bed etc.

Not to worry, bought a pair of mounting brackets which should arrive in a few days (dependent on how busy courier companies are in the lead up to Chinese New Year / Spring Festival [the biggest annual net migration of a domestic population on the planet when hundreds of millions travel across China]).

Reading back through this thread is interesting. I actually forgot it existed, which I guess upon reflection isn't hard given the 3 reported incidents of foot-peg mounting failures here on MCM.

Hard to find data (accurate incidence and prevalence rates) too... G.00gle search engine results don't offer much.
