What was going on here? It looks like a bunch of kids meeting up for a race.

There are legit "crackdowns" on people riding without plates and licenses each year in Shanghai right around this time.

yeah there's been numerous crackdowns in Beijing. I've seen probably triple the amount of cops roaming around, and I've whizzed by several bikers that were pulled over in the city. By the time you get halfway out of the city, (3rd ring road ish) the cops stop caring.

Right way to enforce law! In my home country no one would have the idea riding without license or plate. So, why here?

Just got back from a 7000km trip up north.
On 2 times out of the 10 times I was stopped and checked, DL and bike documents was asked for and inspected.
I am sure if I had not been fully legal then I am sure the shit would of hit the fan.
I just sit on my bike and smile waiting for them to realise today is not there day to nick some western guy on a motorbike.
    Lol.

Agreed I've been pushing for legal, I offer license help in Chengdu no matter if you got one back home or not
I've only got 3 applicants total for full process from nothing and I'm the first in Chengdu that had managed to be able to get legal licenses from nothing
Nearly no takers and my fee al in that included govt fees translator my 60+ hours to get to this point is 3300¥ I make 1400¥ for all my investment the rest goes to other parties involved

IMO a reasonable price. In Germany it is muuuuuch more expensive. Besides u could take that Chinese license and just convert it to German one ☺
