My advise reg. checking head bearings:
Take two guys. Put the bike on a stand so that the front wheel us free. Now one guy hold the bike for safety. The 2nd pull away and push the fork legs to the engine.
If the is no play good. Now do the same thing along the steering head centre line.
    No play -> very good
Finally turn the handle to both limits. Eay tutning and No grinding sound or feeling like sand or metal chips , great!
With this three direction found for good you can say its definetly not your head bearings.
Also check the greasing situation if possible.
One of the most comic thing is that people over thighten the head bearings. When they are new you nearly can't feel it, but soon they start grinding.
So better do it gentle, take a longer ride as mentioned above, and recheck afterwards with my described method.

I had similar "clunk" problem on my jh600: it always happened when I crossed some obstacles in higher speed (over 25 km/h).

I reassembled front end several times trying to figure it out. Then I changed fork oil and it becomes bit better, so after all I was thinking it is related to fork and I gave up after all.

And just about two months ago for some reasons I remove side stand and I found that "clunk" was gone!.. so now I just put piece of rubber pipe over the place of side stand where it is touching motorcycle frame and "clunk" is gone.

So in my case it was just one metal part clunking on the motorcycle frame, nothing related to bearings, wheels, fork etc.

Narrowed it down........it's not the head bearings...as I thought.
Something has worn or broke in the fork leg..
And you cannot buy parts, only complete legs from WK...... £200

Good news you have worked out what the problem is?

That doesn't sound like Head Bearing to me?
    Sounds like front fork problem.
That's what I considered to be the problem in the first place and I hope my post directed you in the right direction.

I push the bike up to a walk at a below walking pace..,nothing..not a peep.
Push down on the handlebars as hard as I can.....Clunk.
May have (possibly ) found the problem...........but.
Would not expect this problem at 4,500 miles.
£200 is out of my pocket. ......only have my wage to live on..,wife does not not work being disabled.
Looks like it could end up on E bay spares or repair...........gutted.....cos I like the bike apart from this.

Are there any alternative fork springs that could be used? Do ER6 fork springs fit? Or, any other alternatives?

The springs seem ok........within factory tolerances. ....length wise..
I assume its something to do with the bushings.
If I bought a Kawasaki part And it did not fit. ...I doubt they would take it back and refund me as it had been used.

Just for reference, a pair of new front fork cost 735 RMB about 84 UK money.
If the bike was new and is less then 2 years old?
Why cant WK sort it out?

A set of front fork seal kit is about 3 UK money
