    Howdy All,

Returning to China at the end of this week for the first time in 9 years. Is the GPS offset issue still relevant, or will my Garmin work right this time around?

    Cheers,

    Dan K.

Every foreign GPS in China will be offset because China has its own coordinate system.

You can only use Chinese edition, either hardware or software.

For example Gaode Map is a great software on your smart phone both for android and ios.
Or you can download a Chinese edition map for Garmin.

check out a APP called Locus maps. I like it because you can copy gpx tracks into, use OpenstreetMap, and you can even load satellite pics from google maps SAT into the cache.
... and you can use download maps for offline usage.

I'm going back to China this week too, been almost 2 years. Unfortunately, no bike for me to ride while I'm there

You're Garmin is probably going to have an offset.

ShuBen is right, Locus is the way to go. Been using it for a year now and love it. Hands down the most amazing GPS app available. Not something you're going to learn in a day before heading out on a trip.

    Enjoy your trip.

For planning trips and getting selfmade gpx track i recommend: routeconverter
Use it with VPN and u get google maps as base where you can make routes, tracks, waypoints. You can convert the route later into a track.
Its helpful when you have off road sections included. Then you can do e.g. two individual routes, convert them to tracks and put the track points for off road in between.

Hi Dan, as other MCMers have replied, there are a number of other GPS options around these days. OSMand works quite well in PRC as does Map2go, although I'm still quite partial to Garmin. Depending on your Garmin GPS model, you might be able to grab yourself a fairly recent updated map of PRC from Unistrong (Garmin's PRC distributor/partner). The Garmin map is available in both Chinese or English, with the latter map version being a year behind the local language version as far as update goes. Not all Garmin models are compatible with the localised Garmin map. There are some fairly cheap deals for Garmin devices via Taobao though. Some GPS devices do still have offset compatibility issues, although it's not as prevalent as it once was.
... happy trails. 9 years is going to feel and seem like a few decades with all the development and changes you're likely to find...

Thanks everyone for the replies. In the end, I left the Garmin at home and am relying on the Maps.me android app on my phone. It works pretty well in China.
