It's been a long while since I've seen anything about this but isn't there a way for an expat with a working visa to get one vehicle into China without paying the import duties? I'd rather not sell this.

Hainan is a special economic zone with no duties companies importing things there. I am going to look into starting a company there and getting it in that way.

The reality is that the process to get private vehicles into Ch!na is quite complicated and expensive. People have attempted to do so and few have been successful.
There used to be a provision in some special zones for a foreigner to import one vehicle into PRC without taxes and duties, but most of these no longer exist. The special situation on vehicles for diplomatic core in Beijing for example still exists however the rules and regulations surrounding this is very strict.
Good luck in your endeavour...
