Wouldn't surprise me but thats a bit overdone. However, they have sentenced a guy to death for causing an accident leaving four people dead - he was drunk and had no license.

Chinese court sentences drunk driver to death
30-year-old man killed four people in accident in Sichuan province
BEIJING - A court in southwestern China has sentenced a man to death for a drunken-driving accident that killed four people in what's being called a first for the country.
The 30-year-old man was found guilty of endangering public safety and sentenced to death yesterday.
He was reportedly drunk and speeding in the capital of Sichuan province last year when he struck four other cars. Four people were killed and another person was seriously injured. He was also driving without a license.Last edited by chinabiker; 10-01-2009 at 07:25 AM.

Is it just me or are the Chinese slowly cracking down more on everything and ramp it up as each year passes.
I remember a few years ago it seemed to be alot less strict? Maybe just me?

Probably get different conditions in different areas but I wouldn't expect enforcement to become more lax through the years. I wish I had gotten to China in the late 90's... like I know some folks here have. Would have been an even more unbelievable experience!

In hindsight the authorities really have no choice but to start clamping down in the case of automobiles.
The chinese who last year became the highest selling country in the world of cars have a problem or will have a very big problem with automobile fatalities.
The Chinese culture of alcohol drinking really does not go well with automobiles. That and having way to many drinks at lunch time and going back to work on building/construction sites.
I wonder when if at all they will make it mandatory the wearing of seat belts?
I also see the police crack down on the number of people drivers can cram into their cars.
Although it is funny to see the driver spot the police tell X amount of people to get out and walk up the road past the police and then get back in the car all in eyesight of the police.
Most of the new and well old drivers have no idea about driving in snow and ice conditions well up in Xinjiang they don't.
