    bowtie,
Try taking off in second gear and see if you can shift to third gear.

Bowtie, I am not sure this will help, but I will toss it out there just in case... when I received my DF,I had a problem shifting to the upper gears... I don't know, too old , short pull on the ankle and no foot strength all combined yadda yadda... I adjusted the shifter pedal down so my foot is almost touching it and I can shift it with little or no effort now. All you have to do is loosen the jam nuts on either end of the shifter linkage and turn the shift linkage so that the shift pedal goes lower and then tighten the jam nuts good and tight(you don't want that thing coming loose and falling off.... ) , it wont help you find neutral or at least it did not help me any... LOL , but it may help your shifting problem. I just don't have the range of movement in my ankle or the strength to lift with my toes like I did when I was younger... I have been thinking of installing a "suicide" shifter on the shift pedal using the conveniently located holes in the shifter pedal. I have a broken chrome vanadium steel breaker bar that would bolt right up to it with a little modification... just to make it easier , and it will probably look really cool...

Let me know if this helps....

The puzzling thing about this shifting problem is that bowtie says it will shift fine when the engine is not running but will not shift out of first when the engine is running. I haven't heard if it will shift from second to third when the engine is running. I'll check my shift lever position in the morning but bowtie's looks fine to me in his photos.

    Strange problem.

    bowtie,
Make sure you have some slack in the chain, say a 1/2" or so. I remember that the chain was very tight when I received my DF. That can cause hard shifting.

Thank you all for all the info..I will be at it again tonight when i get home from work..getting homearound 7pm puts a bit of a strain on me and I haven't much time to mess with things...qwith the kids and all.. but I will take all this information and put it to good use..i will let you know how it goes.
Barnone..I seem to recall i may not have that much slack in my chain..how would you adjust that out to give more slack?
again I thank you all.thus far. Rick.

well the good news..I rode it down the street and it does shift into first then second then third, and down shifts as well..but I still cannot get her to just go into neutral while stiing still. with motor runnig..I adjusted the chain tension ,so i think that had alot to do with the overall shifting.. and I have been working the linkage on the clutch handle and the foot shifter and still have a neutral issue... any other thoughts?
Man i have to get some new risers and handle bars for it..I cannot ride slumped over like this.. funny thing is I find risers all over the place but they are for 1inch bars, and i find bars all over and the bars are all 7/8 what is up with that? doesn't anyone have some relativly priced 7/8 risers anywhere???I like to sit up a little bit more and not fell like I am laying down on the gas tank...but thats just me.

Loosen the rear axle nut/bolt and adjust the two (one on each side) adjusters. The adjusters are the silver threaded rod with two nuts in the photo. Use the marks on each side to make sure the alignment is correct. I believe it's documented in the owner's manual. Insufficient slack in the chain will cause hard shifting since there will be a load on the output shaft. Better to be too loose than too tight.
