#1 Kunming Sept 11-1809-07-2013, 01:50 PM
I got the bike packed and ready to be shipped to Kunming. Naturally I forgot a few things, but I didn't expect the weather to take a nasty turn. Like I should have put the knobbies on. Oh well! I decided to give the Giant Loop soft bag the nod. The panniers don't work well for me. I keep bumping into stuff with that large bulk hanging off the sides, and besides they weight a lot (even when empty).

Attachment 13310Attachment 13309Andy, one of the members organized all of the crating and loading at his factory. The crates were all built by Andy in-house and he did a wonderful job. Here you see us loading my bike into the crate.

Thanks a lot, I'm hearing there is snow in the region and I'm a bit concerned about my tire choice. I'm running Metzler 70/30 tire which is pretty good in the rain and decent in the gravel, but snow is another animal. I really didn't think I'd have to brake out the heated clothing for this trip, but I'm thinking about doing just that.

I apologize for such a late response. In a nut shell the trip was great. Having said that there were a few lessons learned.
1. (Disclaimer: In capable hands almost any bike can be ridden anywhere) I am totally convinced that the BMW GS/ADV bikes are the best suited for this country (in capable hands). That bike handled any and everything that I threw at it.
2. I personally will never take another trip like that without the use of knobby tires. Although not ideally suited for tarmac they are very road worthy, but when riding in adventure mode all types of terrain are encountered and one needs to be properly prepared.
3. We had a very good shipping arrangement but in the future I will try my very best to avoid shipping my bike anywhere in China.
Interestingly enough I can see huge potential in a proper dual sport street legal dirt bike. With a setup like that the adventure possibilities would be endless because there is still a lot of off road exploring to do here. Alas, whoa is me. I can't seem to find anyone interested in leaving the pavement for any extended periods of time. Don't get me wrong, I like riding on pavement but off road is where it's at.2010 BMW R1200 GSA
