#1 Parts in South East Asia10-13-2008, 12:13 AM
Does anyone know the penetration of chinese motos in South East Asia? I am thinking about a big bike trip through the area. I would love to do it on china bike, but I am a little worried about parts availability mechanical know-how.
It is probably smarter to do the trip on a honda as they are everywhere in the Golden Triangle. But is that going to be as much fun?

CC,
Not sure. I know I can't take a bike into Vietnam, but I was thinking of going through malaysia, thailand, loas, and cambodia.

Never been to Laos, but Malaysia and Cambodia have some Chinese bikes and seems like more and more arriving. For the most part I think they still use "genuine" small Honda, Yamaha, and Suzuki step-though like bikes there.
Internationally, China is hitting the dual/dirt sport market hard and you're likely to see more on them as time goes by. If you wanted to take a Chinese bike through these areas, I suggest using one that has very similar honda or suzuki parts, which I think many of them do.
Mechanical know-how wise, these bikes aren't very complicated and certainly any shop in any of these countries could fix them. Even if they didn't have the exact part, as long as the part is close enough, they can make it fit. Hanging out in the little bike garages is all part of the adventure plus you get to meet some good folks that way.
If you have't already, another place to post this question on is "Golden Triangle Rider.com":

These guys are constantly adventure riding around SE Asia and would likely be you best source for all types of this info.
