Sunday-Tuesday Beijing - Innermongolia - Beijing trip

I'm planning to go to Inner Mongolia on sunday. 400km north from Beijing on the first day to get thru the mountains to the grasslands, one day to hang around the deserts or whatever I will find there and return to Beijing on Tuesday evening. I'm going on my own on my Jialing 150. Any places I shouldn't miss on the way? Is it much colder on the other side? Or is it hot?

Hey filipu - Ride sounds like a fun one!
On my Inner Mongocan ride last August I went out via Chengde and back thru Zhangjiakou.
I see you're heading out of Beijing straight NORTH, but if you choose one of the above areas for your ride back, send me a shout and I can dig up the coordinates:

Beijing-Chengde
Some cool farm roads and S-Roads outside of Zhangjiakou heading back towards Beijing's Baihepu and Dishuihu

Zhangjiakou-Beijing
Cool roads "around Bolitai" (Although the actual road up Bolitai itself isn't much fun: corners too tight to be considered fun twisties, but roads around there are nice!)

For Inner Mongolia, the best of the desert landscape I encountered was north of Sonid Youqi (click for map).

I will be camping north of huairou monday and tuesday. We will be just some 100 meters of G111 so give a shout if you pass by 天池峡！ have fun!

Ah....yes it's this landmark!
During my unplanned stopover in Chengde (due to fried stator) I recall seeing this from 避暑山庄 (Bishu Shanzhuang) - part of the Imperial Summer Palace of Mountain Resort. Saw these structures from a distance in the fog so didn't realize there were pagodas on top.

Yeah, seems you'll be crunched for time. You may also consider riding straight to Xilin Gol and then transporting your bike back.
You'll get to see more of IM that way!

I would tend to agree if I didn't live in Shanghai.
On my recent ride back from Luoyang, Henan with Milton he wanted to spend 2 days riding in the mountains and ship the bikes back.
I gave him a speech about how real men ride their bikes back, and the 2 men rode their bikes back.

After the first part of the day through some decent mountain roads, it was ALL FLAT thru farming areas on terrible S-Roads.
We eventually ditched these roads which would have added an extra day to the ride and instead spent the next 1.5 days on the expressway.

Yes, Milton you were right. Would have been much more fun kicking it an extra 1.5 days in the Shaanxi/Henan mountains and training back!

Anyway - another reason to consider yourself lucky living in Beijing.
