03-28-2009, 08:42 PMSo I have been trying to figure out what this is and I think it has something to do with SAI but it doesnt look like others SAI. We dont have emision tests on motorcycles here in Texas so is it something I can remove for better performance?

03-28-2009, 09:19 PMI've recently written a detailed post with several pictures, answering that same question on chinariders.net.
It's post number 3 on this thread:

forchetto, Matt's and my Qlink are a little different. This stuff doesn't connect to the exhaust like yours did. It goes into the cylinder head just under the head pipe. I think it's what is causing a whirrling sound from my motor.

03-29-2009, 02:49 AMThanks for the link to your post forchetto. That is some good info but I have a few questions for you.
1. Is this something I can remove from the bike?
2. If I remove it what changes will I see from the bike?
3. Is there any negative effects from removing this?
4. If I remove it what should I do with the hose that goes to the top of the carburetor?Qlink XF200 Flat Black MODS: P&P Exhaust Pipe-125 Main Jet-35 Idle Jet-Jet Needle Clip On Forth From Top Position-Denso Iridium Spark Plug IX24-Sprocket Specialists #550-16 16T Front Sprocket-SAI Removed-Rear Fender Cut Off-Brake Light Flasher-55 Watt Headlight Bulb

03-29-2009, 03:46 AMSome engines, like Matts, have a different cylinder head casting which has a place for the injection gear and an extra passage for the air to be injected directly into the exhaust port. Others, like mine, keeps the normal pre-emissions cylinder head and they stick a rather unsightly extra pipe into the main downpipe close to the exhaust port where they fit the reed valve block.
This is mine, now blanked off:

03-29-2009, 04:11 AM1.- Yes. It's a common modification in all makes of bike. There are even kits sold for the purpose. They contain a blanking plate, gasket, screws, and vacuum stub cap. There's very little need for them as the plate used for blanking is very simple to make at home.
2.- A reduction of the exhaust system temperature, on some bikes the reeds make a rattling or buzzing noise, and often the exhaust makes a popping or burbling noise on the overrun due to this device.
3.- An increase of carbon monoxide (CO) emissions which would break the law. If the bikes are regularly tested for emissions it would fail. Here in Spain the transport department test doesn't test bikes for emissions, but the tester looks to see if you've blanked it off and if so would fail you.
I intend to replace my gear for that test in a couple of years time, but what a lot of people do is keep the device and insert a blind gasket or thin aluminium plate between the two flanges. Another way is to find a ball bearing that fits well into the hole without falling into the exhaust port and clamp it between the flanges.
4.- Find a tight-fitting rubber blanking plug and just cap it off. If you can't get hold of one use a short length of the hose and plug that with a screw or some other form of plug. My bike doesn't have the sophistication of the vacuum valve thing and the vacuum take-off in the rubber carb manifold comes already capped.
This system is a bit like those interlock switches they fit in the clutch lever and on the side stand, to stop you from riding off with the stand down or to engage gear without pulling on the clutch lever. Great idea to comply with some nannying law and get the bikes passed by Ministry tests and homologated, but in the end they're nothing but trouble. It happens on all makes, but specially on Chinese bikes that the aformentioned switches are the source of lots and lots erratic running, starting problems and breakdowns.Last edited by forchetto; 03-29-2009 at 04:35 AM.
