Hi Dan, as other MCMers have replied, there are a number of other GPS options around these days. OSMand works quite well in PRC as does Map2go, although I'm still quite partial to Garmin. Depending on your Garmin GPS model, you might be able to grab yourself a fairly recent updated map of PRC from Unistrong (Garmin's PRC distributor/partner). The Garmin map is available in both Chinese or English, with the latter map version being a year behind the local language version as far as update goes. Not all Garmin models are compatible with the localised Garmin map. There are some fairly cheap deals for Garmin devices via Taobao though. Some GPS devices do still have offset compatibility issues, although it's not as prevalent as it once was.
