Thanks ZMC888, I haven't forgotten about your earlier offer of help. I want to go to Xinjiang as a first choice, so I am following leads there at the moment. However, if that proves to be a non-starter, I may well head to Shandong. I've bought a ticket to Hong Kong for the end of August, but my plans once I arrive are still pretty flexible. I have a friend who already lives here, who is already riding! I believe he is on a 6 month business visa, I will propose the idea that he attempt to get a temporary driving license, so as we can test the water in this area. I will follow your advice and try to apply for an 'E' license.

Wouldn't call it advice Ask for D and accept E. It's kind of their negotiation margin

My wife's dl expired last month and she got it renewed for another 6 years.
They didn't ask for the visa, but we still don't know whether it's not needed, they forgot or they didn't care.
You have one month to renew the dl after it expired and you get it renewed with paying a fine within one year.
You have to do it all over if you overstay the validity over one year, which means then you'll need the residence permit.
You can renew it only one month before it expires.

Again, that's in Beijing, other places may be different and things may change over night

Mine is up in October, hard to believe 6 years passed so quickly. I remember when I got it I was sure China would grow up and act like a real country long before it expired. Can't believe they still can't play by international rules and I'm actually going to get another one.

Time is flying indeed. October 1st 2009 marked the 60th anniversary of the PRC, October 1st 2010 will mark my being here for 10 years

Not just you mate, it is blank to me as well. I think it is the server side because quite often such things, as with this one, cannot be seen in Aus. either. I just get a blank, not even a link that doesn't work. Sometimes signing in two or three times and refreshing sorts it, sometimes not.
