I'm no expert, here's what I did anyway.
I bought a can of carb cleaner. It comes with a thin long straw that can be attached to the spray header. I shut the fuel tank, detached hose from the carb, and with the straw attached I sprayed liberal ammounts of carb cleaner ... I started the bike and sprayed some more ...
Worked miracles! No need to take the carb apart.

General maintenance is a very big documentation project. It's smarter you just buy a maintenance handbook and follow that.
