What if you were on a brand site and in the corner it listed the current number of owners of a certain model. Then offered a clickable link to communicate with some of them. Its all rooted in relational data based technology and its based on a Vehicle Identification Number and that allows for the differentiation. Propagation of data fields that fill data tables that are all linked. A certain model shares a certain string of characters with the VIN.
It simplifies the system entering a VIN would only bring up model related data. Compiling it produces metrics and also statistics, it also could be used to identify components. A certain string of the VIN would represent a production run and in that a set of specific parts and in that each having its own code. That is used in quality control as if a certain part had a propensity to fail and subsequently get replaced the next run of the model in production would get the new improved part. Such a approach inevitable reduces the total number of part failures of a model. That’s a use of quantitative methods and quality control, it identifies poor quality and in that also the sources of that poor quality. It does that because in the list of component parts is also a list of suppliers and or sources. Each part having a data sheet that form digital tiers or cascading files, again relational and linked on shared embedded codes. They are primary or secondary dependent on the search.
Searching on a specific part can bring up multiple models. Searching on a model brings up multiple production runs. Each run off production would be consistent and offer a consistent list of associated parts. If a component changes on a model then that subsequent run would have a different set of components and in that use a different string of characters in a VIN to identify that difference. It may be 99% the same as a previous run depending on the number of changes made in the parts used.
If a run had a part used that presented a danger to the rider it brings about a recall of that part and all owners of that model would be notified.

Ok someones been watching too much Robotech LoL
In response to post #172 - the amount of work to create a stable database that is updated by whom? the liability alone for that type of structure outside of a Govt Agency would be ridiculous and if it is a Govt agency guaranteed that it will be at least half a year behind at bestGardo northern NJ/NYC

The future is all about real-time and event driven data, it does not take a year for your ATM transaction to occur it's instantaneous and event driven. I should not post such revelation on this site, its not something most people get, they just cannot unless they understand the technology behind it and have actually worked in such environments, even then some still do not get it.
I do agree that there is total liability in accountability.
Relational Data is a technology it is used in most industries, people steal things from Wallgreens and then are they surprised when the RFID tag shows were they have taken it on a map? Not only the address of the location but that tag also is associated with an inventory list.
There is open source software that allows anyone with the ability to set up a data table and manage it. Once a single model is defined it does not have to be entered every time….it only gets entered once. A data table can hold images in a field it can even hold a hyperlink, a command “clicking on it” opens another window as in cascading.
Vendor lists and associated supplier…its not rocket surgery.
Linking to a satellite is currently happening all day long…On Star or a Tom Tom…if it freaks you out then you could pull the sim chip and maybe wrap you head with tinfoil?
Once a model is defined the data does not keep getting entered it get reused over and over each model already has its own VIN and that’s all that gets entered and that defines it and it is what get registered so you can prove you own it and also the manufacturer can be held liable for what it is and how safe it is. Why do you think the NHSTA demand VIN coding documents?

MJH - all valid points but in the same aspect do you want a Govt agency tracking all your movements. Its very 1984, I ride to be free and get away i wouldnt want someone to track me or how fast I'm not supposed to be going
