@ barnone.. I cured my cutting out problem after all the switching of the jets i did. Its running stock jets now with the closed ended filter and a little less than 2.5 turns out on the adjustment. No more cutting out.. I did mess with the accelerator pump though also.
Anyway i went to lowes today and picked up this stuff. I decided to spend a little more and get the joint-less coupler to keep it all chrome and not have the black rubber coupler. (im not using this filter with the ram.. it was just for the pic.. Ii will be running the stock filter until my new one arrives in the mail)
Im thinking I will mount it facing the left side so that it will not be taking in any exhaust heat
total cost on this was about 14 dollars
i found this filter on ebay for 9 bucks from china.. it looks just like the stock filter with the open end. (2012 filter has the little knob sticking through it where the crank was vented.. I have plugged the knob.. id rather replace to delete it all together). This will be used for the ram air setup,

I know Chi tried that reverse cone filter and it didnt work well as it forced too much air.
any thoughts on something like this being better than the stock filter? Maybe Caulk off the back side so that the air is forced inside and doesnt pass through and out the back of the shield?

I could probably make something like this using my existing filter and a big plastic cup.. but this might just be more restrictive than having no funnel around the filter.. any thoughts?? I could easily make some sort of scoop.. but not sure if it would be beneficial or not.. and then of course there would be extra drag.. and with a motor this small it might do more harm than good at 50+mphLast edited by Bobthebobber; 08-29-2013 at 11:28 PM.

It sounds to me like the carb is unable to flow enough air with a filter on there.I would try a velocity stack and facing the carb vent tube toward the front of the bike.

You can get the Clevland CycelWerks Heist, its almost the same bike but they tack on 50% for their 'troubles'...
May well be worth it for you.Last edited by axa; 08-30-2013 at 06:43 PM.

whats wrong with the setup you have in this pic above?
This is what i do with the stock filter, fixed my top end WOT issue and leaves me a bit of extra air without leaning it out according to the sparkplug.
But yet i still have enough airflow that i can apply a bit of choke with no apparent problems...
Does it give you too much air? The stock filter is apparently restrictive enough to prevent this...
By the way, you'll be able to butt that p-trap right up against the carb and minimize the size of the couple to about an inch, then the rubber black is at a minimum.
That said, the black on our matte bikes don't look so bad

That may just give you the right mix... but then again it just may not. Note that it says "adjustable" ring clamp, not air flow...
But I think you may have found the right idea with that red cap with the holes in it, if your getting too much air with an unrestricted ram, then you can cap it and add holes until you find the right balance...
That said, you may just want to try the stock filter with the p-trap first, works for me...Last edited by axa; 08-30-2013 at 06:19 PM.
