my 250 yamaha morphous gets right up to 80 easily. and with a cvt. thats what a 250 does. what does a 229 do?

Depends on what gearing you put on it, how you ride it, what type of gas you use (BP Premium generally generally has 10% better performance than most other fuels), wind resistance, hills, luggage, weight of bike, rider, passenger, and luggage, and how fast you go.

If you put real heavy gears on the bike, that accels at snails pace in final gear, you might get 100+ MPGs out of the engine.

On average, with a 36T sprocket, you can expect around 85MPG max.
With a 17/35 setup you could get 105MPG.
Acceleration is ok in first upto third gear, but if you need to accelerate fast, you'll need to rev up the engine high (in the 6k RPM range) before shifting.
