#1 CFMoto & KTM04-26-2013, 05:28 AM
Went to CFMoto Hangzhou yesterday, bit of a cluster fark, given the organisation I and a mate put into to go there (we drove up).
Saw the 650NK and 650TR, but no way to see the rumoured adventure / dual purpose bike.
Didn't get to see the guy who I deal with as he was away or too busy with business and instead organised a couple of young 'know-not-much' types from domestic sales. They wouldn't tell us anything or they simply didn't know anything about the rumoured CFMoto adventure bike at first. After some calls back and forth by all and each of us to other third parties, finally we were told that there is some form of collaboration between KTM and CFMoto (but not what form the collaboration takes) only seemingly that the KTM990ADV (although it may have been the KTM690 - but who knows in the TIC translation BS) forms the basis of the CFMoto adventurer design, but with the same 650 inline twin cylinder engine as shared with the NK & TR. The only thing I could find remotely mentioning any type of tie-up between CFMoto & KTM mentions a J/V on the KTM forums here. Even KTM's own corporate website doesn't make any mention of any tie-up with CFMoto.
No word really on ETA, as it's hush-hush and still in development. I guess it's just a matter of watch this space. I have been told so many different possible release dates, I give up!!! - throwing my hands up in the air in disgust!
We saw a couple of other groups of foreigners at CFMoto, most likely potential overseas buyers, which is par-for-course given my last trip and experience at CFMoto Hangzhou where I saw and even talked with a few interested importers/exporters.
The two groups yesterday were each with their own hosts, and seemingly too pre-occupied so we didn't cross paths to have the chance to speak with them.
We left CFMoto none the wiser concerning the adventurer / dual purpose bike, though with a few more possibilities over the potential KTM involvment but again who knows given the TIC BS!
Only time will tell.
Aside from that there is a new dedicated CFMoto shop that has opened in Taizhou where it's said it is possible to test ride before one buys a CFMoto. Interestingly the CFMoto Zhejiang distributor or agent is based in Taizhou, and I've been to his shop. He carries a few other brands too e.g. Shineray, Piaggio, & Galaxy plus a couple of other brands. But no test rides at that shop. The new CFMoto shop in Taizhou is separate from the agents shop.

04-26-2013, 08:04 AMWell, KTM have the Bajaj connection so it doesn't make too much sense to go further east... Or maybe the Bajaj "collaboration" is so successful that they want to repeat it in China

04-26-2013, 09:24 AMA Chunfeng-KTM collaboration would be interesting and promising, though I wonder what incentive KTM has to pursue this. Learn about a market that BMW and Harley are hitting hard? Find a production partner? Let someone else test this segment before they jump in in a big way?
I would not blame them for being reluctant; this is not a golden age of motorcycling in China but rather a highly restrictive and challenging dark age, especially with so many urban bike bans and such strong favoritism toward cars. All we can do is watch, and enjoy what few choices we have, and hope for some changes for the better.
Cheers!

09-14-2013, 03:00 PMCalled CF sales department this April something, and the teller even did know the 650cc dual purpose bike. After she talked with a guy and told me it WOULD be in the market in the second half of this year. From pictures posted on the internet, I would think it would be based on Versys 650 from Kawasaki. Anyway, let's wait.

Yeah right KTM is going to have some form of collaboration with a Chinese motorcycle manufacturer.

Spoke with my CFMoto contact, seems indeed likely that KTM and CFMoto are involved in a ADV style bike together or at least are developing a strategic partnership of some kind.
I can't make that much sense of the discussion though as the contact said that the bike is going to be pretty expensive circa 200K. It was suggested that the bike will be primarily a KTM and lesser of the CFMoto element. Perhaps (this is my supposition) most of the running gear will be KTM and a few of the more simple components will be sourced from CFMoto, perhaps the rolling stock arrives in PRC to CFMoto from the KTM factory and then put together with the rest of the bolt-ons at CFMoto in HZ. So there is co-operation and likely licensing between CFMoto and KTM including that it's possible to order a KTM through CFMoto. Now I don't knoiw if that means a wholly 100% KTM or some sort of pre-order CFMoto-KTM ADV bike, so don't farkin shoot me down on that!
No idea where this leaves the 650 twin cylinder in all of this - likely too early to tell.
The official CFMoto announcement has not been released in this regard so that's all that I can get at the moment.

I hope it works out OK. I just worry because most consumers, western or Chinese just don't want any Chinese involvement in high end expensive goods. Certainly there is much more risk for KTM than CFMOTO.
There are lots of similar examples with motorcycle and mountain bike production. When SR Suntour (cheap Taiwanese and China MTB fork maker) started producing forks for Marzocchi in around 2008 it caused lots of warranty issues and customer complaints. It worked really well for Suntour and they now produce much better forks these days.
Loncin BMW, loads of other examples too.
