I think my apache is different. I watched a YouTube video on how to remove it and it sounds like the method you describing.
On my bike there is no lid with 3 screws. There is a lid on the right side with 4 or 5 screws but to get the lid of it looks like you have to drop the whole box down.
I'll try it later on the week when I have time.
